WHAT IS A DFK?

Two fuels.
One power application.

A dual-fuel kit adds controlled gas delivery to a suitable diesel generator. Diesel continues to provide ignition while LPG or natural gas replaces part of the diesel demand.

The generator remains a diesel-based system. The proposed installation is assessed for gas operation and diesel-only fallback, with control settings matched to engine load and protection limits.

SELECT THE GAS SUPPLY

LPG and CNG need different fuel modules.

Diesel + LPG

LPG delivery requires suitable pressure regulation and vaporisation equipment, matched to the proposed storage arrangement and gas demand.

Diesel + CNG

CNG uses a compatible high-pressure supply interface and staged pressure reduction before controlled delivery to the engine.

PNG feasibility

Where a piped natural gas supply is available, assess its pressure, flow and quality for a suitable gas module. Availability is site dependent.

The fuel module is selected for the gas source. LPG and CNG hardware must not be assumed interchangeable. Final ratings and component specifications follow the generator assessment.

KIT & INSTALLATION SCOPE

Controlled delivery.
Monitored operation.

Electronic controls

Dual-fuel controller, wiring and operator interface. Configuration options include a touch display and remote monitoring, subject to the selected package.

Gas handling

Fuel-specific regulator or LPG vaporiser, gas filtration, isolation and electronic shut-off valves, plus the engine delivery interface.

Engine protection

Load measurement, gas pressure sensing, exhaust temperature monitoring and knock sensing used to manage or reduce gas delivery.

Integration & commissioning

Engine-specific installation scope, calibration, diesel-mode checks, load evaluation and operator handover.

POTENTIAL PROJECT BENEFITS

Make the most of an existing asset.

Fuel flexibility

Evaluate an additional fuel pathway while retaining diesel operation in the proposed system design.

Operating cost opportunity

Assess savings using measured diesel and gas consumption, actual energy output and local fuel prices.

Reduced diesel demand

Displace a portion of diesel at suitable operating loads. Substitution varies with the engine, load cycle, gas quality and control limits.

A site evaluation is required to confirm performance, emissions, savings and payback. Diesel substitution is different from percentage cost saving.

ENGINEERING BEFORE A QUOTATION

Is your generator
a suitable candidate?

  • Generator make, engine model, kVA rating and emission stage
  • Typical load, load variation and monthly running hours
  • Current diesel consumption and fuel price
  • LPG / CNG / PNG supply, price and site arrangement
  • Location, operating requirements and available installation space

VTM project support

We help define system selection, supply scope, installation requirements and commissioning checks for your generator application.

Quotation scope specifies the selected gas module, controls, sensors and services. Site gas infrastructure and storage are assessed separately.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you choose a kit.

Does dual-fuel mean the generator runs on gas alone?

No. In this application, diesel remains the ignition fuel. Gas replaces part of the diesel demand. A dedicated gas engine conversion is a different project.

How much fuel cost can I save?

Use a site-specific assessment with measured consumption at comparable electrical output. Engine load, gas source and fuel prices affect the result; a standard savings percentage is not guaranteed.

Will the kit work with every generator?

Compatibility depends on the engine and governor, load profile, gas supply, protection strategy and installation arrangement. Share the engine details before selecting a kit.

Does fitting a DFK automatically meet emission requirements?

No. Application-specific documentation, testing and applicable permissions must be reviewed. A dual-fuel kit and a retrofit emission control device (RECD) serve different functions.
